Subject: CALL FOR MALUS/APPLE GERMPLASM PROPOSALS

TO: All Apple/Malus Research Workers RE: USDA Germplasm Evaluation Proposals

Date: 18-October, 2001

The Malus/Apple Crop Germplasm Committee (CGC) received notification from Dr. J. Scott Cameron, USDA Natl Program Leader, Horticulture and Sugar Crops, that funding will be available in FY 2002 for germplasm evaluation projects. Therefore, the Committee solicits proposals of research to evaluate Malus/apple germplasm. In the past, successful proposals have typically requested $5,000 to $25,000 Deadline for submission is Thursday, 15-November, 2001.

===========================================================================

Following is the process for submitting grants and applying for funds.

1. Follow the STANDARD EVALUATION PROPOSAL FORMAT

2. Please submit an electronic file (Word, WordPerfect or PDF files formats) of your proposal to be received by Thursday 15-November, 2001 to: Curt R. Rom Crom@uark.edu FAX: 501-575-8619 Department of Horticulture, PTSC 316 University of Arkansas Fayetteville, AR 72701

Proposals will be circulated for review by members of the Malus/Apple CGC and given a rank prioritization based upon the following evaluation criteria. See Apple Germplasm Proposal Review Form

  1. Relevance to Apple CGC priorities,
  2. Scientific soundness and feasibility of proposal
  3. National and/or regional interest in the problem; impact
  4. Amount of germplasm to be screened.

After submission of highly rated proposals forward to the USDA, they will be evaluated on the national need of the evaluation data, the likelihood of success, quality of science, and the likelihood the data will be entered into GRIN and shared with the user community. Priorities of the Malus/Apple CGC are listed in the file Malus CAC Priorities.doc file. Typical funding is for a single year with a budget range of $10,000 - $15,000. (requests range $5,000 - 25,000) Proposals which are evaluated to be appropriate and to be forwarded to the USDA from the Apple CGC will have their proposals returned to secure appropriate authorizing signatures. The completed grant proposals will be submitted to the USDA.

PLEASE CIRCULATE THIS TO OTHER SCIENTISTS AND ANYONE INTERESTED IN THIS RESEARCH AREA WHO MAY NOT HAVE RECEIVED THIS ANNOUNCEMENT.
