Hello All,
Is this dinner just to discuss the bitter pit situation, or is it just get together for the NC140 folks here? I would attend if this is the case; my daughter is with me.

Hi all,
I figured I could start the discussion of bitter pit measurements.
For my lab, we do a lot of evaluation of bitter pit; both at harvest and during storage. We take several different approaches depending on the project and the amount of time resources we want to put into the evaluation. I am happy to discuss this more with anyone who might be interested in some more detailed evaluations. I am not evaluating any NC-140 trials but I have a couple of my own rootstock experiments and collaborator rootstock plantings that my group is making measurements on. It would be great to standardize the approach across the group so that these evaluations become more powerful.
For just field evaluation, we take our sample and if we are storing fruit, we split the sample into two (one for at-harvest evaluation and one for after storage). I prefer at least 50 fruit/replicate. Then, the fruit is left to sit at room temperature for one week to accelerate bitter pit induction that would have emerged in storage. We then make an evaluation on whether or not bitter pit is present (binary) and also a % cover estimate. We have also counted the number of pits but we found that % cover is a better indicator of severity. It is also important to factor in crop load and fruit size in these evaluations since both are co-dependent factors contributing to bitter pit development. At harvest, we have a measure of crop load for the trees we sampled from. We have also measured internal bitter pit by slicing the apple into 1 cm cross-sectional disks and counting the number if internal bitter pit lesions on the top side of each disk working from the calyx end upwards. We do this because internal bitter pit appears earlier than external symptoms. However, this is very time consuming and not useful for evaluations of large numbers of fruit.
For post-storage evaluation, if bitter pit is going to develop, it will usually emerge within the first two months of storage at regular atmosphere so our storage times usually include 3 months of storage in RA. After storage, we do the same evaluation that we did at harvest except without the 7 days at room temperature.
If anyone would like to discuss this more before harvest comes (we start early next week), I am available.
Cheers,

Dear NC140 Member-
Please welcome Dr. Megan Muehlbauer to our NC140 group.
She has just started August 1 as our Rutgers Fruit Extension faculty member and will be our NJ NC140 member.
Question for the Group regarding the 2010 Honeycrisp trial. Is anyone working on rating bitterpit by rootstock in this trial? And if not would anyone be interested in working on and rating the fruit this year for bitter pit by rootstock? We are about to begin harvest (season is running 7 days early in NJ).
Would/does anyone have a visual rating protocol for bitterpit?
Much thanks. We look forward to seeing you in Wenatchee.
