One of the driving forces for this inquiry is the sorry state of the plant materials received for the 2017 cherry rootstock trials, and while these were the worst materials I’ve ever received for an NC140 trial, I know there have been other similar challenges. </div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">A huge amount of time and effort goes into planning these trials, they get delayed when propagation material numbers fall short of the promised timelines, and a major research effort (trial land & irrigation/trellis infrastructure, the search for adequate funds, and scientist time) is committed to by cooperators all across the continent, and then to have the final delivery of materials call into question the very real possibility that a trial may not even be worth planting due to compromised tree quality and genotype omissions, absolutely cannot be repeated if we are to sustain the type of unique and valuable scientific progress we have achieved under NC140 to date.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">Do we need a list of reliable and unreliable nurseries as potential partners for future trials? Does a company like Phytelligence offer greater (though currently unproven) reliability and uniformity when it comes to certified budwood, certified genotype, etc? Would, at least in certain cases, we be better off with field-grown standard bareroot trees or with elle-pot-grown smaller trees (dormant or foliated?) that would require (but also facilitate) possibly more uniform canopy establishment?
