1999 NJ ENDOTHALL THINNING STUDIES

Introduction:

Objective 1:
Evaluate the Blossom Thinner Thinrite (endothall, Elf Atochem) in randomized study against other
thinning agents in alternative programs for thinning response in Macoun apple.

Objective 2:
Conduct a demonstration style, multi-variety screening of fruit size responses to Thinrite as a blossom
thinner. Evaluate Thinrite's efficacy for increasing final fruit size due to it's thinning properties as
compared to an industry standard and an untreated control.

Study Area:

Objective 1:
A twenty-year-old commercial block of Macoun apples on MM106 was used to conduct this
experiment at Mountain Top Orchards in Glen Gardener, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. The
experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with single tree treatments and four
replications.

Objective 2:
A similar block of trees containing various cultivars was provided for the screening at the same
Mountain Top site. Cultivars utilized for this screening consisted of SunGold Golden Delicious on
MM 111, Jonathan on M 111, and Penn Stayman on MM111. This screening was set up in a
demonstration style, commercial orchard format with no replications and three tree treatments

Materials and Methods:

Objective 1:
Tree row volume (TRV) was established at 250 gallons per acre dilute. All treatments, except the
endothall, were applied dilute (250 gpa) using a 400 gallon Durand-Wayland model 1500 airblast
sprayer, that utilized 7 nozzles per side to apply the treatments. The endothall was applied at 3x
concentrate (85 gpa) using the same equipment. The same commercial equipment was used to apply all
treatments, with the tractor traveling at a forward speed of 2.79 mph and the sprayer operating at 250
psi.
